2004 Thanksgiving Hangover Regatta, Cleveland The Cleveland CR-914 fleet at Edgewater Yacht Club gathered on a temperate Saturday in late November for its first “Thanksgiving Hangover Regatta.” Commemorating the last day of haul-out for the big boats, we set a course right in front of the EYC clubhouse. The 10-boat fleet had a consistent southerly breeze at 8-10 knots, with overpowering gusts blowing down the course for just about every start throughout the day. The weather was better than we deserved to expect for the last weekend in November – partly sunny with a high of 49 degrees Format of the racing was twice
around a windward-leeward race course – with as many starts as possible before
Jim Andraitis, owner of two CR-914’s (and a J-22), won the series in a walkaway, using his red-hulled #92. He took 4 firsts and never finished worse than 6th. He loaned his blue-hulled #93 to Craig Peck, who placed 9th overall. This was only the second scored event that the fleet has hosted; most other sailing has been more informal. But the event succeeded at bringing in a couple of other CR-914 owners from the area. The upshot: We may have started a new Thanksgiving Weekend tradition, and we’ll certainly run scored events more often.
